Cats and Lucy
My design began with an introduction to the Beyond the Bark Puppet and Installation Theater and one of their puppets, named Lucy, from "The bright side of the moon", written by Sue Meehan.
First of all, the story,I'm talking about, is a fairy tale for adults, very serious and quite sad....... As I started working, I began to notice myself and my design spiral into darker and darker places which were gloomy and unpleasant to explore. Out of sheer accident two kids got involved in the design process and decided to help me alleviate the burden of the dark design by rewriting the story and re-making Lucy, thus the design started to incorporate elements of comic relief such as the friendly cats. The mystery comes from the prints which are embedded on the garments: cats, the big Lucy's eyes and of course Lucy, the little girl who has been daunted all her life by her scars which she constantly asks her father about. These scars convey on to the outfits as the embroidery. It is unclear how they got there, just like Lucy's scars, which are secretly a dark event in Lucy's past, revolving around caterpillars..........eating her.................
